Let's admit it! We enjoy the Kardashians and have come to learn that many people do not share said enthusiasm about the family. All we can do is hope that this blog makes all those who claim to “hate” the Kardashians feel SLIGHTLY different about them. Slightly.
By Pam Quinn (Writer)We all have our TV guilty pleasures, don’t we? Mine happens to be the Kardashians. Keeping up with, Miami, New York… if any of those Armenian chicks are involved in a show (generally on E!) I am all over it! I’ve come to ask myself, as I continue to watch this show every Sunday night, why do I feel so guilty about watching it?
At the end of the day, it’s about a hard working family who all love each other very much. They help and support one another through the best of times and the worst of times. YES, they can be annoying and ridiculous; YES they can be spoiled and whiny but they always remind themselves of how lucky and grateful they should be. Why should I cower at my addiction to this family?
Oh right… because people seem to have really strong, negative opinions about this family, mostly for reasons surrounding the middle child: Kim. The public claims that her “sex tape” is the reason why she’s so famous and I’ve got to say… yup that’s absolutely true. That being said, Kim Kardashian didn't let that sex tape define her and neither should you.
Breakin' down the Kardashian Kast:
Kris - The "teenage-like" mother
Bruce - The voice of reason in the madhouse
Kourtney - The sarcastic, bitchy new mom
Scott - The American Psycho on the mend
Khloe - The one who tells it like it is... though through a whine
Lamar - Didn't know what he was in for
Kim - The nicest sister, but the most self involved
Kris H. - Doesn't know what he's in for
Rob - The kid who longs to be a man, but is stuck as kind of a man-child
Kendall - The model it may be too late for
Kylie - The youngest whom we all have hope for
A Kardashian History lesson....
Kristen (now Kris Jenner) married Armenian attorney Robert Kardashian in 1978. They were madly in love and had four children: Kourtney, Kimberley, Khloe and Rob through the duration of their marriage. These kids were so unbelievably close to their father.
Even after the couple split in 1990, they remained VERY close friends. Kris later married Olympian Champion Bruce Jenner, (whom I refer to as THE VOICE OF REASON.)
(See Bruce Jenner on Left, Robert Kardashian on the Right)
Robert Kardashian, the father of the family, was O.J. Simpson’s attorney for the case that kept America watching. The Kardashians were close friends of the Simpsons and when the trial hit, the family was torn. Kris Jenner sat with Nicole’s family as her ex husband defended the accused murderer of their daughter. Robert stood close by his dear friend despite his plaguing doubts of O.J.’s innocence and despite the fact that it was bringing quite a strain to his friendship with Kris. This trial was especially hard on the four young Kardashians as they felt they had to choose which parent to support through the ordeal.
Soon after the trial was over, Robert Kardashian was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and died in 2003. Robert had also been friendly with Kris’s husband Bruce, and his death was so incredibly hard on everyone. Especially the youngest daughter, Khloe.Khloe and her dad had a very close and special relationship. When he died, she completely shut down. Khloe became a bit of a party girl and dealt with her grief in VERY negative ways; i.e. drinking and driving. It wasn’t until after she was arrested for a DUI, that she really started to get her act together and focus on her budding business “DASH”, a clothing store located in Calabasas, Miami and New York City. At her rehearsal dinner, a choked up Bruce Jenner (her step father) gave an emotional speech about the late Robert Kardashian:
The death of Robert Kardashian left a huge hole in the family’s heart. They all tried their best to cope and move on after losing such a prominent, loved figure in their lives. The family seemed to find comfort in the arms of their relationships at the time. Kris in her husband Bruce:
Rob Kardashian had met and fell in love with Disney’s Cheetah Girl Adrienne Bailon. He found quite a bit of solace in that relationship from the pain of his father’s death.(The couple broke up in 2009)
Eldest daughter, Kourtney met Scott Disick (who I refer to as Patrick Bateman – the "bad guy" you can’t help but root for).(Note: Scott is not a serial killer, but then again... we're not sure if Patrick Bateman was either, are we?)
And Kim, as usual, fell into the focus of her budding career to distract her from the heartbreak of Robert’s passing.
BST (Before Sex Tape)
In 2004, Kim Kardashian was hired by Brandy to be her personal stylist. This spiraled into an opportunity Kim had never dreamed of. After witnessing her victorious taste and style, several celebrities followed Brandy’s footsteps and hired Kim to be their personal shopper! She created a small business for herself, which became the first of many to come. This stylistic success prompted DASH in 2006, a clothing store opened by Kim and her sisters in California. The three girls worked hard to start this growing chain and the work paid off, leading to additional DASH’s in Florida and New York.
In 2007...
THE SEX TAPE:
The girl took a horribly embarrassing situation and gave a new meaning to the phrase “Make the best out of a bad situation.”
Later in 2007, Kim got together with her mother and Executive Producer Ryan Seacrest and crossed her fingers as they launched the idea of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” – a reality show that looked into the TRUTH of the Kardashian empire. The show was a huge success and continues to bring in impressive ratings.
The first time I was exposed to the Kardashian’s it was merely watching the opening of their show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," where they all get together for a staged family photo. I remember rolling my eyes and not being interested the slightest bit in a family I assumed was simply uninteresting and crying for attention. The fact of the matter is that they’re actually interesting in their normalcy. If you look past the money, the fame, the clothing and the clubs you notice the fights, the break ups the arguments, the love and support are all things that we’ve been through or been around in our own lives. “Why do I need to watch them live their life? Who cares?” Why do we watch any reality TV shows? Whether we like it or not, reality TV exists and it’s extremely popular. Sure you have the choice not to watch ANY reality TV if you find it trashy and an “entertainment disease”. That’s not what this blog is about.
All I’m saying, to the Kardashian haters out there, is if you choose to take the time to get to know them a little bit better, your initial opinion might be altered into a more positive viewpoint on the family. Mine was. Otherwise you’re just spewing hatred for people you don’t really know much about.
