I'm heading to the Motherland
By Geoffrey Kidwell (actor)
As it turns out, I’m going to Africa on Sunday evening.
Specifically, I’m going to Zimbabwe.
This is going to be a major adventure for me. In fact, it’ll be the furthest trip I’ve ever taken and certainly the most adventurous. Sure, I did the requisite backpacking around Europe thing. I even lived abroad while in college. But this…this is a horse of a different color.
This marks the first time I’ve ever endeavored to travel to a place I know basically nothing about.
Well that’s not entirely true. I know a few things about Zim (that’s what the locals call it, apparently).
The musical theatre geek in me hopes that I’ll land in Harare, the capital city, and immediately be greeted as Nettie from The Color Purple was.
I do know that the country is ruled (and I use that word intentionally) by this guy, Robert Mugabe.
Turns out he’s pretty rude. I’m gonna go ahead and stay away from him. – or at least avoid pissing him off if I run into him at the Gristedes.
I also know that traveling there is going to be good for me. I’m bringing lots of music, a few great books, my journal (of course) and an open mind. It’ll be nice to be away from New York City for a bit – to see and feel things that are completely out of my realm of normalcy.
Don’t get me wrong; I’ve been to strange and exotic places. I have lots of friends in Williamsburg. But this is different.
How different? Well…I’ll let you know. My next Crazytown post will come to you all the way from Zimbabwe. So stay tuned!
Namaste.
AND NOW...THE WEEK IN WHITNEY HOUSTON!!!
Miss Houston singing, I'm Every Woman at Constitution Hall in Washington DC in 1997. Sparkley dress, sassy attitude. Everything. Miss you, girl!
