Happy Fourth of July Crazytowners! In celebration of Independence I wanted to share with you a few fond memories of Fourth of July's past and a few suggestions on how your might want to celebrate the present!
-By Leah Bonnema (Stand Up Comic)
I don't have the kind of memory where I recall a detailed order of things. Instead there are pictures and scenes in my head from certain events throughout my life thus far. A Fourth of July holiday that sticks out in my memory is when my father and I went to visit my aunt, uncle and cousins in Texas. One of my clearest recollections was walking into their home and being in complete awe of the miracle of central air, which I had never before experienced.
We went to a baseball game and it was the first large sporting event I'd ever attended. The sun had set and the lights coming up from the field and the cheers rising from the stands were electric and dynamic. We saw a huge fireworks display and I recall sitting near a woman who had a large cobra snake coiled around and around her lady boob. It was all very new and exciting to me! Rick Astley was as hot that summer as the weather in Texas!
A completely different memory, a few years back I had Jury Duty the week previous to the July Fourth holiday. It was my first time getting Jury Duty and I (and apparently I am one of the few people who feel this way) was very much excited to part of the process that although flawed is pretty amazing and unique.
This Fourth of July - I am so excited because I'm going to get a little bit of everything awesome all in one place! Modern Day Philosophers, a monthly comedy show co-hosted by the awesome (in its truest meaning) Tim Warner and this cool glass of issues, is happening today! And in celebration we have an amazing event planned for y'all! Come to The Creek and The Cave and start out your evening festivities with an open vodka bar from 6:30 to 7pm! Then laugh with us and our amazing line up (did I mention it's a FREE comedy show?!) FOLLOWED BY all of us going up to the roof just in time to watch the fireworks (The Creek is right on the river and we will have a perfect view of the display)!
If at the end of your holiday weekend you need to sit back and relax with some good food and fun people (and who wouldn't want to do that??!!) please join the illustrious Katie Compa and me again (uh, I just can't get away from myself) for Compa Bonnema Cinema Classics (you should just stay at The Creek all weekend is what I'm basically saying) at 1pm Sunday July 7th! We will be watching The Descent and serving Second Breakfast (with your choice of unlimited mimosas or mock-tails for those of us who have stopped drinking because they/we lost all their/our pants and ran out of ways to apologize to friends). Move your toukis and make sure to movie matinee with us!
