Cool kickstarter campaigns to create next year's gifts
By Cathryn Salamone (Actor/Musician)
One of my favorite end-of-the-year pastimes is going to stores like Sharper Image and Brookstone that sell mildly useful, oft overpriced, and always outlandish gifts. Due to the rising popularity of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, professional industrial designers and amateur innovators alike have a shot at creating the next big useless gift. I made the rounds on Kickstarter and harvested my favorite ideas that might wind up underneath the wrapping next year.
1. Foaster: The Best Dock Since Sliced Bread
Kickstarter Description: "Foaster is a toaster for your phones. Foaster keeps your iPhones charged, eliminates clutter, and looks great in your kitchen."
If all of the cheap items have been already snagged on the wedding registry, this could one day serve as a cute surrogate.
2. Letterforms: Washable Writing Medium
Kickstarter Description: "An environment friendly reusable and washable sketching medium for Children, Students and Creative Professionals."
Hopefully this will replace iPads as kids' drawing/coloring medium of choice.
3. Gigs 2 Go: Tear & Share Thumb Drive Pack in Recycled Paper
Kickstarter Description: "Tearing is Sharing: When you need to share files on-the-go, simply tear off a tab from the Gigs 2 Go pack. Each tab is a tiny thumb drive. Because Gigs 2 Go is inexpensive and made from recycled materials, you can feel comfortable leaving a tab with a friend or colleague. And you've still got more tabs, ready when you need them. "
At first, I thought this was a silly idea - but since they are made from recycled paper pulp, why not?
4. Solace: Audio Hood
Kickstarter Description: "This is Solace. A hood with headphones designed to provide personal space in a public setting."
Finally, a hood to allow coffeeshop gamer creeps to be even creepier.
5. Tail Lights
Kickstarter Description: "Tail Lights are a revolutionary LED lighting system for horses that uses color, and style, to keep horses and rider visible during any type of weather or lighting levels."
Should this succeed, I'm voting for the next product in this line to be glow in the dark horseshoes.
6. Beyoncé Dancing Wall Clock
Kickstarter Description: "A wise man once said... 'ALWAYS BE YOURSELF...UNLESS YOU CAN BE BEYONCE, THEN ALWAYS BE BEYONCE.' This Beyoncé dancing wall clock is perfect for any Beyoncé fan who's crazy in love with the Queen."
Count me in, especially if it has an alarm function. Waking up to a plastic Bey besting me at dance moves at seven in the morning is motivation to get through ANY trial of my day.
