Yes, we have a new podcast for you guys to check out. But first things first: are you aware that Barbra Streisand has a mall in the basement of her dream mansion?? Like a whole street of Victorian shops of antiques, sweets, costumes, and ribbons on display-- all owned by the Funny Girl herself, but displayed as though it were a fancy promenade. If your mind is as blown as mine was when I found out this information, you'll need photographic evidence, and have no fear for there is a lot of it.

And as much as I wish I was bringing up Babs's mini mall just for funsies, it is also the genesis of the play we covered for our latest podcast. Buyer & Cellar, currently playing at The Rattlestick, imagines how things would shake out if our favorite Yentl hired someone to man her private playground through a one-man show starring the talented and wonderfully coiffed Michael Urie. We holed up at Bosie Tea Parlor to discuss this intriguing and hilarious play (and eat free pastries)! Though it's not a "new" work of theatre, since the Second Stage production is a revival, Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years has become such a cult hit that we couldn't pass up the opportunity to cover for the podcast (not to mention see a professional production for the first time ever). Greg already wrote an awesome blog post about his experience seeing the show, and we talked abou the iconic-ness of the show in our latest blog for the podcast. Seeing this version of the show, starring Betsy Wolfe and Adam Kantor and directed by JRB himself, was an opportunity to see a show we had come to love done the way it had always been intended.

KIM & ERIN EAT CHEESECAKE (AND TALK ABOUT "REALLY REALLY")

The latest podcast episode where Kim and Erin discuss new work over a slice of cheesecake.

For our second episode of Kim & Erin Eat Cheesecake (And Talk About That Show They Just Saw) in 2013, we decided to mix things up. In this very special episode, we ate cheesecake and a multi-layered crepe cake (Spoiler alert: it was delicious!) at Azya in the West Village and welcomed our first ever podcast guest, our friend Gabriella Miyares, a Junior Graphic Designer for Galison and also designed our very own podcast logo! She joined us to see a particularly special and rather buzz-worthy play, Really Really, which is playing at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. A new play by Paul Downs Colaizzo, Really Really tells the story of a college morning-after gone wrong where the aftermath of a typical rager includes a rape accusation and ever-changing allegiances as a group of friends try to piece together what exactly happened the night before.

Really Really has been a polarizing play for many audience goers, and it was probably the one that divided our opinions most out of everything we’ve seen so far. KIM & ERIN EAT CHEESECAKE (AND TALK ABOUT "THE VANDAL")

Welcome to the first installment of Kim & Erin Eat Cheesecake (And Talk About That Show They Just Saw) in 2013! Erin and I have been seeing some really great shows lately (and dining on some pretty good cheesecake), and we are excited to share our insights and chat more with all of you. We've launched a separate blog for the podcast here, where we are going to post some additional content and giving some extra insight into the shows we see.

In this episode, we eat key lime cheesecake and molten chocolate cake at The Bubble Lounge, while discussing The Vandal, a new play written by actor-turned-playwright Hamish Linklater that is currently playing at The Flea Theater. The Vandal is a play about a woman and a boy who meet at a bus stop in Kingston, New York, and what transpires between them as they wait together in the cold. (Warning: this podcast will contain spoilers, though we did try to keep from talking about the big twist in the first half of the podcast)

KIM & ERIN EAT CHEESECAKE (AND TALK ABOUT "GIANT")

The fourth episode of our podcast where we talk about a new show over a piece of cheesecake.

In this “very special holiday episode” of Kim & Erin Eat Cheesecake (And Talk About That Show They Just Saw), we eat a slice of Ricotta cheesecake at Tarallucci e Vino in the East Village, while discussing Giant, which just played its last performance at The Public Theatre on 12/16. With a book by Sybille Pearson and music and lyrics by Michael John LaChiusa, Giant is a beautiful retelling of the Edna Ferber novel by the same name. It tells the story of a cattleman and his East Coast wife, spanning generations as it recounts the lives of the couple and their family and friends living in Texas. In a rather epic and, uh, dare we say, giant production, this musical tells of the trials and joys of a family living, loving, and working in the unique state they call home.

Other Crazytowners have talked about this show, and we were thrilled to be able to see it before the end of its run. While it's no longer playing at The Public, it will live on in cast album-form, so be on the lookout! (Warning: this podcast will contain spoilers)

KIM & ERIN EAT CHEESECAKE (AND TALK ABOUT "THE OLD MAN AND THE OLD MOON")

The third episode of our podcast where we talk about a new play over a piece of cheesecake.

In our third installment of Kim and Erin Eat Cheesecake (And Talk About That Show They Just Saw), we eat a slice of red velvet cheesecake from Pasticceria Rocco in the West Village and discuss The Old Man and the Old Moon, a new show by the PigPen Theatre Company that is currently playing at the The Gym at Judson. The Old Man and the Old Moon is a multimedia play with music that tells the tale of an old man who must set aside his duty of filling the moon with light in order to embark on an epic journey to find his wife, who has sailed away in search of a mysterious song.

In a haunting production featuring PigPen's trademark aesthetic full of shadow puppets, found objects, folk music, and spirited performances, this play was a wonderful example of how the power of storytelling, particularly on the stage, can transcend genre, budget, and the limitations of the physical world.Tune in to episode three above, and go out and see The Old Man and the Old Moon, which is running until January 6th. In the second episode of our podcast, Kim & Erin Eat Cheesecake (And Talk About That Show They Just Saw), we eat a delicious slice of lemon cheesecake at Sarabeth's on Central Park South and talk about New Zealand playwright Gary Henderson's Skin Tight, which is currently running at 59E59 and is produced by One Year Lease. Telling the brutal and beautiful love story of Elizabeth and Tom, Skin Tight is an exploration of the couple’s relationship, demonstrating the dangerous tightrope that love can walk between redemption and destruction. Using vignettes, dance, and fight choreography, Skin Tight pieces together a collage that encapsulates the entire history of a relationship as both Elizabeth and Tom reflect on their time together. In our conversation, Erin and I talk about knife dances, unpack Denis Glover’s poem "The Magpies" (on which Skin Tight is based), and drink something called a Cinnamon Toast. My friend Erin and I used to work in theatre together, and whenever we saw a show, we would find ourselves having detailed, in-depth conversations on street corners. One night, we took our usual post-show discussion to Junior's and joked over coffee and cheesecake that we could make a podcast out of our conversations. As much as we made fun of the idea at the time, it's always been a lingering thought, and about a month ago, we decided that we would work to try to bring the project to fruition.

Kim & Erin Eat Cheesecake (And Talk About That Show They Just Saw) is a conversation between two writers/avid theatre goers about new and exciting works of theatre. Every episode is a dialogue about the construction and themes of ambitious, unique theatrical experiences. Through this podcast, we hope to offer an interesting analysis of contemporary plays and to begin a conversation about how current theatre-makers are approaching new material. Also? These discussions take place in the amount of time that it takes to eat a piece of cheesecake.
